Cart won't run....resistor is hot ???

I have a 2002 club car DS IQ lifted. The cart will run about 23 mph, but I have had overheating issues lately, and finally gave in to the understanding that I need a torque setup for my application. So I have purchased a new motor, controller, and solenoid but it hasn't arrived yet. In the mean time, my golf cart quit running. I thought the motor or controller must have finally burned out. I then pushed the cart back into the garage and kept smelling something hot/burning. So, I crawled up under it and found a very hot resistor on the solenoid. This was odd because the key was in off position, switch in neutral, and the cart switch was in "tow mode" position. I unhooked the battery cable going to the solenoid and it cooled off. What does this mean? Do I have a bad resistor, or perhaps a bad solenoid? If so, is my used motor and controller still okay for a friend wanting only speed in a cart. I am very new at golf carts. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
