How do you know when your batteries are unsalvageable?

Went over to a friends today. They have a 2011 EZGO TXT 48v with eight 8v batteries. They mistakenly left the charger off all winter and there wasn't enough voltage to trip the charger.

I brought my battery charger over there and checked everything before starting. The series read 1.7-2 volts total. Each battery read less than 1 volt if anything at all.

I put my charger on two batts at a time at the suggestion of past threads, and was able to get two pairs up to about 9volts.

One of the pairs wouldn't even register on the charger.

I told them to watch the cables and batteries to make sure they didn't get warm, and to check them every 10 minutes.

I'm hoping we can get enough voltage to trip the cart charger to finish the job.

Water was good in all the batteries and they hadn't dried out.

How do you know if they need to be replaced, and how salvageable are they at this point?
