Ezgo Robin engine starting problem

My old man has a late 60s three wheeled ezgo with the robin engine, he has been using it for over five years, no issues. The other day he pushed the petal down n nothing happened.I am looking at it, checked what I could connections batt ect. The only way I could get the starter to go is if I jumped the solenoid on battery side, from large post to small,but that's all it did was run starter, do I need a need solenoid or just half a brain, any help is appreciated.
